"Cloverfield" is the codename for the new project by J.J.Abrams that is causing quite a frenzy on the internet due to the secrecy being enforced by the Production Company
Cloverfield is one of the best/worst kept secrets in Hollywood right now. What is known? Will the movie live up to the viral hype?
The movie is being produced by J.J.Abrams, whose long line of hits includes LOST,Alias and Felicity.
According to the secret preview teaser that was shown during some viewings of the new Transformers movie, the release date is January 18, 2008.
It's a science fiction movie about an attack on New York City by a giant monster known internally to the crew as "the Parasite."
Reportedly, it is being shot with hand-held cameras. The story is told from the perspective of New Yorkers fleeing the attacking creature. It looks as though it is being shot with personal digital video cameras. While surreal events unfold, the viewer sees it from the perspective and through the lens of ordinary New Yorkers, a fact that adds a sense of gripping reality in the wake of the previous real life stories we have seen played out over and over on the news.
Perhaps it is the secrecy itself. For their own reasons, information about this film is being tightly controlled. Is it for publicity? It's possible.
Paramount pictures and J.J.Abrams's "Bad Robot" are the companies putting out the movie. Officially, Paramount denies the existence of the project, though their company logo was included in the trailer.
Matt Reeves has been announced as the director of Cloverfield. Matt is a former writer on Abrams television show "Felicity." His only film directing credit is the "The Pallbearer" with David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow, but his television directing credits include episodes of "Conviction", "Homocide", "Relativity" and "Felicity."
Officially, no, but it was illegally recorded and released on websites like YouTube.
This kind of internet hype can go two ways. The Snakes on a Plane phenomenon of 2006 showed that internet attention does not necessarily equate to box office success. When a movie gets too much attention, expectations are set very high, and any movie has a hard time living up.
The movie is reportedly a low-budget film. It's not intended to be a mega-million dollar action movie. The release date supports its status. Most of the big action films are released during the summer months, but Cloverfield is set to be released in January.
