I haven't seen Legend, but your other top fantasy picks are all a little unusual in having pretty good parts for women. As a female myself, I sometimes find it hard to find anybody in fantasy movies to root for. Not in these!

Although Tolkien didn't write the greatest women's parts, the LOTR movies turn Arwen into a lead instead of a dreamy, dreary bit part, and re-edit Eowyn from being kind of a depressive mope into a pretty fun chick.

I love Sally in Nightmare Before Christmas, and even the 1933 King Kong gives lots of non-screaming time to Faye Wray. Yay!

I agree absolutely. Fantasy films all too often "girl down" the heroine making her a two dimensional back-up figure for the hero. So why is it that sci-fi heroines are such bad asses while at the same time remaining human?

I refer, of course, to Ripley from the Alien series (especially in Aliens where we got to see her maternal side). Karen Allen was great too in Raiders of the Lost Ark, a hard drinking chick who somehow remained feminine (as opposed to Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom, a screaming horror). Since most films are written by men establishing a solid, believable female character can be a chore that we all too often fail at achieving.

I really wouldn’t mind seeing more strong roles for women on-screen, but unfortunately this condition is nothing new in Hollywood. I guess only time will tell as to whether or not women will finally be on an even footing with the guys.

You know what film I thought had great women's parts? Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. That one rocked.
