Truthfully, the whole "gore is more" trend of movies like Saw and Hostel just seems to replace genuine fright with revulsion. Remember the shower scene in "Psycho"? One didn't have to see the knife carving into skin or the muscle wall pulling away from the ribcage to feel horrified. By contrast, "The Shining" had its share of blood, but it was used more as a condiment, not an entree. It was also an excellent movie and deserves to be on a top 10 list.

I did like "The Ring". Stupid? I suppose everyone has seen a movie premise or two with which they can't relate. Samara was as unexplained as the source of the zombie plague in "Night of the Living Dead" (which should be in any top 10 hurror movie list), or the Chinese puzzle box in Hellraiser. The most we get by way of an explaination is that "she never sleeps". Who or what she is, is left up to the audience to speculate. The characters in this movie also believably convey their transition from the normal everyday to acceptance of the curse and its reality. I would like to see this in its original Japanese.
